Waiting in Plain Sight:

What began photographs of as streaks of sealant used to repair roads has beome a pursuit of forms and figures contained in peeling paint, refinished concrete and other everyday surfaces.

In a world increasingly driven by AI and digital technology, Greenfield focuses on imperfection in the physical world. In his photographs, Greenfield celebrates the joy of noticing the overlooked revealing forms and figures with stories to tell.

Brought to life with bold color and texture, Waiting in Plain Sight is a collection of non-AI generated photographs that elevate random monochrome layers of tar into expressions of resilience and reimagination.

The Waiting in Plain Sight collection captures the beauty found when we personally recognize our flaws, heal from our wounds, and celebrate our lessons learned from adversity.

At a deeper level, the Collection speaks to the human spirit, which like the roads we travel, endures stress and breaks that must be tended to and cared for.

DAN GREENFIELD

Artist Statement

Austin-based fine art photographer Dan Greenfield draws inspiration from weathered, worn, and repaired surfaces in his series Waiting in Plain Sight.

Through photographs of streaks of road tar, peeling paint, cracked concrete, and other overlooked materials, Greenfield reveals a hidden world of figures, forms, and narratives waiting to be discovered. His image invite viewers to slow down, look again, and experience the joy of finding something unexpected in the ordinary.

In a screen-dominated world increasingly shaped by AI-generated perfection, Greenfield celebrates the human act of noticing. By layering color, texture, and multiple photographs, he transforms everyday surfaces into imagined landscapes that honor imperfection, resilience, repair, and renewal.

Ultimately, in Greenfield’s photographs, actual surface serve as a starting point for acts of discovery and transformation
