As I previously wrote, I have a developed a fascination with tar snakes — those black streaks of tar in the pavement used to seal cracks vs repaving the whole road.
This fascination has become an inspiration and led to a new collection of non-AI generated composite photographs I am calling Roads to Renewal.
Your invitation to an imagery world of tar snakes and power of renewal
At first glance, these imperfections may seem quite ordinary. Look closer, and they reveal mythic figures, human forms, and animal shapes hidden in plain sight.
These “tar snakes” do more than patch pavement. They preserve a record of wear and tear and stresses and strains. Rooted in my images is the broader theme of renewal. My interest in tar snakes attempts to honor both literal mending and metaphorical healing. The road, like the spirit, endures stress and cracks that must be tended to.
Through vibrant color and layered texture, Roads to Renewal are attempts to transform overlooked repairs into works of art — showing beauty in the broken and strength in the mended.
It is my hope that you too look down and discover these streaks of tar and draw strength from the art of noticing and the power of renewal.
